PAGI masih menggeliat dari peraduan, ketika tangan saya mendadak tergerak untuk menyusuri folder Sweet Memories di laptop. Entah, tiba-tiba saya mual dengan Ari Lasso, NAFF, atau DEWA. Ingin lagu yang benar-benar menyentak spirit! Pokoknya jangan sekadar Akhirnya Kumenemukanmu punyanya NAFF itu, atau Hitam Putih-nya DEWA. Jangan! Jangan yang cengeng! Tapi lagu yang bener-bener LAGU!
Maka, ketemulah We Are the World dari deretan lagu sweet memories. Ups! Bukankah ini lagu semasa aku di SMP. Bukankah lagu ini yang pernah membuatku menangis karena dikabarkan bahwa We Are the World diciptakan untuk membantu warga Afrika yang kelaparan?
Adalah USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa). Ini nama kelompok artis terkenal dari Amerika Serikat di bawah pimpinan Harry Belafonte, Kenny Rogers, Michael Jackson, dan Lionel Richie. Mereka merekam singel hit We Are the World di tahun 1985. Lagu ini berhasil menjadi hit di AS dan Britania pada bulan April 1985.
Keuntungan dari penjualan singel ini diberikan kepada USA for Africa Foundation untuk penanggulangan kelaparan dan penyakit di Afrika. Rekaman pertunjukan live kelompok ini disertakan dalam set DVD Live Aid yang dirilis tanggal 8 November 2004.
We Are the World ditulis Michael Jackson bersama Lionel Richie, dan direkam 28 Januari 1985 dengan Quincy Jones sebagai produser. Pada awalnya, proyek ini diberi nama United Support of Artists agar memiliki singkatan "USA", tapi akhirnya dinamakan USA for Africa. Lagu dirilis tanggal 8 Maret 1985 dan berhasil menduduki puncak tangga lagu di banyak negara di dunia.
Tahun 2004 terbit DVD ulang tahun ke-20 tahun "We Are The World" yang diberi judul “We Are The World The Story Behind the Song”. DVD ini berisi berisi dokumentasi rekaman lagu We Are the World.
